In Hindu religion, there has always been a tradition of worshiping Mother Cow. The mantra for cow worship is- Om Surabhyai Namah. What is the benefit of worshiping Mother Cow? By worshiping cow, one attains age, fame, health, wealth, house, land, prestige, happiness in the next world etc. Cow worship is especially beneficial for having children. In the month of Kartik, Ashtami of Shukla Paksha is celebrated as Gopashtami. On this day, there is a special tradition of worshiping and serving Mother Cow.

 

Lord Krishna with Cow

Cow is very dear to Lord Krishna. Lord Govardhan protected the cowherds, gopis and cows from the wrath of Indra by donning the Govardhan mountain. When the pride was broken, Indra and Kamdhenu adorned God with the name 'Govind'. The word cow has three meanings – senses, cow and land. Shri Krishna gives joy to all three. Shri Krishna has incarnated only to protect cows, Brahmins and religion.

Shri Krishna's love for mother cow was amazing and the festival of Gopashtami is dedicated to her. According to mythology, from Pratipada to Saptami of Kartik, Shukla Paksha, Shri Krishna had donned the Govardhan mountain to protect the cows, cows and gopis. After this, on the 8th day, Indra's ego was dissolved and he took refuge in God. Then Kamadhenu anointed Lord Krishna and from that day he was named Govind. Since then, the festival of Goposhtami started being celebrated on Ashtami.

In the month of Kartik, Ashtami of Shukla Paksha is celebrated as Gopashtami. According to religious belief, Lord Krishna first started grazing the cows on this day. On this day, the calf should also be worshiped along with the mother cow. Cow is considered worshipable in Sanatan Dharma.

 

33 crore deities reside in cows
It is a mythological belief that the cow originated during the churning of the ocean and 33 crore deities reside in the cow. By worshiping them, God becomes pleased and bestows blessings. Due to which whatever problem occurs gets eliminated and if someone is sick or unwell then health improves. By the grace of Mother Cow, one gets financial benefits and wealth increases. According to the scriptures, 33 crore gods and goddesses reside in the cow.

It is believed that if a cow is worshiped and served as per the rituals on the day of Gopashtami, then one receives the blessings of the Gods and Goddesses. By worshiping the cow, Shri Krishna becomes happy and showers blessings on his devotees. Worshiping cow on Gopashtami brings happiness, prosperity and peace in the house. On the day of Gopashtami, along with worshiping Mother Cow and Girdhar, one should also read the story. This results in virtue.

According to Bhavishya Purana, cow is the form of Lakshmi. Sun and Moon reside in the eyes of the cow, Rudra in the mouth, Vishnu in the neck, all the gods and goddesses in the middle of the body and Brahma resides in the back part. Therefore, all the gods and goddesses including Goddess Lakshmi are pleased by the worship of the cow and its calf.

 

 

 

Cow worship, vrat and prosperity

Women get the happiness of children by worshiping cow and calf. This fast is also observed for the good health and long life of the children. Explaining the importance of this fast in the Puranas, it is said that the family of the house whose women worship Mother Cow on this day becomes prosperous. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is pleased with those who satisfy the cow by feeding her bread and green fodder. There is never any untimely death in such a family. By worshiping cow and calf, all the gods and goddesses are pleased and all kinds of sins committed knowingly or unknowingly are eliminated.
