Lord Krishna with Cow
Cow is very dear to Lord Krishna. Lord
Govardhan protected the cowherds, gopis and cows from the wrath of Indra by
donning the Govardhan mountain. When the pride was broken, Indra and Kamdhenu
adorned God with the name 'Govind'. The word cow has three meanings – senses,
cow and land. Shri Krishna gives joy to all three. Shri Krishna has incarnated
only to protect cows, Brahmins and religion.
Shri Krishna's love for mother cow was
amazing and the festival of Gopashtami is dedicated to her. According to
mythology, from Pratipada to Saptami of Kartik, Shukla Paksha, Shri Krishna had
donned the Govardhan mountain to protect the cows, cows and gopis. After this,
on the 8th day, Indra's
ego was dissolved and he took refuge in God. Then Kamadhenu anointed Lord
Krishna and from that day he was named Govind. Since then, the festival of
Goposhtami started being celebrated on Ashtami.
In the month of Kartik, Ashtami of Shukla
Paksha is celebrated as Gopashtami. According to religious belief, Lord Krishna
first started grazing the cows on this day. On this day, the calf should also
be worshiped along with the mother cow. Cow is considered worshipable in
Sanatan Dharma.
33 crore
deities reside in cows
It is a mythological belief that the cow
originated during the churning of the ocean and 33 crore deities reside in the
cow. By worshiping them, God becomes pleased and bestows blessings. Due to
which whatever problem occurs gets eliminated and if someone is sick or unwell
then health improves. By the grace of Mother Cow, one gets financial benefits
and wealth increases. According to the scriptures, 33 crore gods and goddesses
reside in the cow.
It is believed that if a cow is worshiped
and served as per the rituals on the day of Gopashtami, then one receives the
blessings of the Gods and Goddesses. By worshiping the cow, Shri Krishna
becomes happy and showers blessings on his devotees. Worshiping cow on
Gopashtami brings happiness, prosperity and peace in the house. On the day of
Gopashtami, along with worshiping Mother Cow and Girdhar, one should also read
the story. This results in virtue.
According to Bhavishya Purana, cow is the
form of Lakshmi. Sun and Moon reside in the eyes of the cow, Rudra in the mouth,
Vishnu in the neck, all the gods and goddesses in the middle of the body and
Brahma resides in the back part. Therefore, all the gods and goddesses
including Goddess Lakshmi are pleased by the worship of the cow and its calf.
Cow worship, vrat and prosperity
Women get the happiness of children by
worshiping cow and calf. This fast is also observed for the good health and
long life of the children. Explaining the importance of this fast in the
Puranas, it is said that the family of the house whose women worship Mother Cow
on this day becomes prosperous. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is pleased with
those who satisfy the cow by feeding her bread and green fodder. There is never
any untimely death in such a family. By worshiping cow and calf, all the gods
and goddesses are pleased and all kinds of sins committed knowingly or
